A banner moment in an already bright season came Friday night as the visiting Tiverton football team trounced Toll Gate 35-7 in Warwick.
The win marked the 200th career victory for Coach Bob Murray, a level few Rhode Island football coaches have achieved.
And after the game, Tiverton was ready to celebrate.
The bus ride home took an unusual detour down through Fall River. At the Tiverton town line, police cruisers, then fire engines provided escort all the way home to the high school where parents, former players, friends and staff provided a loud welcome.Murray, who began coaching in Tiverton as an assistant in 1977 when he was a student teacher there and took the head job five years later, told the Providence Journal that he never let his players know about the milestone before the game.
“It isn’t about me, it’s about them,” he told the Journal. “It’s always been about the players. It has to be about them.”
And he doesn’t just coach football. A teacher at THS and the school’s athletic director coaches throughout the school year. He’s coached basketball in the winter (boys and girls), and baseball in the spring.
“My wife is a saint,” Murray told the paper.
Murray’s career record as Tiverton football coach is 200-164-5. He has won three Super Bowls, six league titles, made 10 playoff appearances, and seven Super Bowl games.
Back to Friday’s game, Tiverton improved to 5-1 as quarterback Stephen Gacioch scored two touchdowns and rushed for 149 yards. Running back Andrew Perez rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on six carries. David Williams scored two touchdowns and ran for 52 yards on eight rushes.
Matt Potvin kicked three extra points.
