TIVERTON — The contract for Town Administrator Matt Wojcik, that expires Feb. 24, has not been renewed by the Town Council.
In a brief one-paragraph statement, Town Council President Joan Chabot announced the decision Wednesday night at 10:20 p.m.
"After review, the employment contract of the Tiverton Town Administrator, Matthew Wojcik, will not be renewed by the Town Council. The current employment contract’s term is three years, ending on February 24, 2017, with an additional four (4) month period after that date, to June 24, 2017. Mr. Wojcik will continue to serve as Town Administrator during that time, and may apply for the position of Town Administrator during the application process," read the statement.
The statement was signed by President Chabot.
No further information was available at the time of the announcement.
All day Wednesday, rumors of Mr. Wojcik's departure circulated in town, but could not be confirmed. Calls to numerous elected and appointed town officials were either not returned or were unsuccessful in eliciting reliable information. Mr. Wojcik could not be reached.
From sources, the decision appears to have been made in a Town Council executive session Monday night when Mr. Wojcik's contract and his performance was up for a regularly scheduled review by the council, meeting in executive session.
Mr. Wojcik was unanimously appointed to his position by the council on Monday, February 24, 2014, and began his duties the following day.
"It's a privilege to be here and I appreciate the offer," Mr. Wojcik said in public comments moments after the vote appointing him in 2014. "Public service is an honor, and you always serve at the pleasure of the public."
Mr. Wojcik, 47, came to Tiverton from Cumberland and now lives in Westport.
Prior to coming to Tiverton, and since 2009, Mr. Wojcik had held the position of Director of Economic Development and Human Services for the City of Woonsocket.
In that capacity he had been involved in business recruitment for the city, served as a board member for various city organizations, and was executive director of the Woonsocket Redevelopment Agency.
He also served as a point of contact for the city with social service agencies and the local senior center.
From March 2005 to November 2009 he served in the office of the Governor as Deputy Director of Appointments, recruiting, screening, and interviewing candidates for state boards and commissions.
Mr. Wojcik is a graduate of Georgetown University, with an M.S. in International Business/Trade/Commerce, and a J.D. (law degree) in international law and legal studies. He speaks Polish.
Mr. Wojcik's three-year contract calls for a first year salary of $90,000, a probationary period of six months, and the possibility of salary increases after the probationary period (of up to 1.5%) and subject to negotiation annually thereafter.
Information about terms and salary under his current contract is not presently available.
Mr. Wojcik succeeded James Goncalo, who served since 2008 as Town Administrator until last November, when he abruptly resigned in the wake of a controversy involving his handling of allegations involving Bob Martin, the town's former maintenance foreman.
Under his original contract, Mr. Wojcik was to be provided with a cell phone and the sum of $2,500 annually to partially compensate him for the use of his personal vehicle for official use.
He was also provided a term life insurance policy in the amount of $100,000.
