Strong defense and two timely goals helped Pilgrim best Tiverton 2-0 in the Division II field hockey semifinals at East Greenwich High School on Wednesday night. Pilgrim's Kayla Morin scored on a pass from Paula Cavanaugh with 22:49 left in the half. Tiverton pressured Pilgrim goalkeeper Lindsay Fontes, but couldn't put the ball in the net.

"We started off on our heels a little bit and they took advantage of it and came down and scored a quick goal. We gained momentum and had it into the second half. We played very well and had many opportunities to score but we couldn't put it into the net," said Tiverton coach Brittany Vasconcelos.

Pilgrim scored again midway through the second half when Brittany Boyd fired a shot through a scrum of players from 20 yards out and found the corner of the net.

Tiverton goalkeeper Ally Ramos saved 8 shots in the loss. "Rachel Perry, Haley Mendoza and Ally all played a great game. Our girls played well. They fought to the very end. We just came up short today," said coach Vasconcelos.

Tiverton finished the season with a 9-7-1 record in Divison II North.
