The Tiverton major league all-star girls softball team beat a tough Portsmouth team 13-3 twice in a row this week to win the state District 2 championship.
It’s been a good run for a group of Tiverton players who, for the previous two years, won the District 2 minor league title before moving up to the majors this year.
Entering the championship round against defending champ Portsmouth, the Tiverton girls lost their first game to Portsmouth 8 to 2 and faced elimination with their next loss.
“With hearts of lions,” said manager Mike Plourde, Tiverton proceeded to beat Riverside, East Providence, and Newport before again having to face Portsmouth — and needing to defeat Portsmouth twice in a row.
The strong Portsmouth squad had run through the district unbeaten and needed only one victory to retain the title.
But Tiverton, behind strong pitching from Grace Plourde and solid catching from Emily Oakes, beat Portsmouth 13 to 3 before returning to Tiverton Wednesday for a winner-take-all showdown.
This one was decided early as Tiverton scored runs in bunches to earn a 13 to 3 victory and the championship — counting minors, their third in a row.
“The Tiverton bats came alive in the final two games and some defensive gems were made by Mackenzie Oliveira and Gabby Piscani,” Plourde said.
Emily Oakes of Tiverton and Olivia MacDonald of Portsmouth were presented game balls for their outstanding play behind the plate.
The Tiverton Major League softball team members are: Grace Plourde, Mikayla Andrews, Mackenzie Oliveira, Emily Oakes, Jillian Mercer, Lily Keating, Samantha Bettencourt, Charlotte Jones, Gabby Piscani, Emma Beaudoin, Savannah Goss and Avery Couto.
Working with Plourde were coaches Jeff Oliveira and Chris Mercer.
