Anna E. Gorton, 96, Portsmouth

Anna Eugenia Gorton, 96, of Portsmouth, passed away on February 8, 2019, at home, surrounded by her family, after a brief illness.

Anna was born on December 21, 1922 in Fall River to the late Joseph Sullivan and Elizabeth (Harrington) Sullivan. Anna married Vernon L. Gorton Sr. in 1948, and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage until his passing in 2010. She was also preceded in death by her son Vernon Gorton Jr.

Anna graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Fall River. As a young woman, she served during World War II as a WAVE in the United States Navy. She was employed for many years as the Deputy Finance Director for the Town of Portsmouth. Outside of work, she gave her time as a member of the St. Anthony's Women's Club and the Democratic Women's Club.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at her shore house on Mount Hope Bay in Portsmouth. Her greatest joy was time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Anna is survived by three daughters, Jo-Anne Gorton of Portsmouth, Nancy Harrington and her husband Kevin of Portsmouth, and Patricia Khokasian and her husband Raffi of Tiverton; her daughter-in-law, Beverly Gorton of Portsmouth; her nine grandchildren, Micaela, Hannah and Emma Harvey, James Cheever, Ryan and Connor Harrington, Samuel and Maggie Gorton, and Bridget Henriques, as well as her three great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, February 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 14, at 9 a.m. from the Connors Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Anthony's Church, 2836 East Main Rd, Portsmouth. Burial will follow at Portsmouth Cemetery, Turnpike Avenue.

Memorial donations may be made to the Vernon Gorton Jr. Memorial Fund, 45 Springer Ave, Tiverton, RI 02878.
