Antone Joseph Arruda, 93, of Tiverton, R.I., passed away on July 26 at St. Anne’s Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Sarah (Clark) Arruda.
Born in Portsmouth, R.I., he was the son of the late Marianna (Borges) and Antone Arruda. He had served in the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran. He was involved in the Southern France invasion.
He was a member of the VFW in Portsmouth, Post 5390. He had worked as a truck driver for 38 years and had worked with the Teamsters prior to his retirement in 1985. He had also worked for Callan Construction, Pacific Oil and was a quahogger for 27 years.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Parish and an avid ballroom dancer. Mr. Arruda is survived by a daughter, Brenda Perry (husband Joseph) of Tiverton, and a son, John W. Harrop (wife Elaine) of Cape Coral, Fla. He also leaves his grandchildren, Cherilyn Courville (husband Michael), Joseph A. Perry (wife Kerri), Jennifer Perry (companion Aaron), Sara Perry and Jonathan Perry (companion Haylee). He leaves eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Edward, Frank, and August Arruda, Louise Sousa and Alice Jackson.
Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, 462 Main Road, Tiverton, R.I., with a 10 a.m. Mass at Holy Ghost Church. Burial at Pocasset Hill with military honors. www.almeida-pocasset.com for online guest book.
