Area under Tropical Storm Warning as Hermine nears

Rain and heavy winds should begin mid-afternoon Monday, possibly continuing through Wednesday

The East Bay, along with most of Rhode Island, is under a tropical storm warning as Tropical Storm Hermine is expected to turn to the west Monday, bringing it closer to Rhode Island's shore.

Tropical storm conditions could begin late Monday afternoon, and continue through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Rain is forcast to begin mid-afternoon Monday, intensifying Monday evening. Sustained winds upwards of 25 mph are possible, with gusts approaching 40 mph, the weather service reports.

The rain and wind is expected to continue Tuesday, into Wednesday. The storm, the center of which is expected to remain off-shore, will continue to kick up high surf, which began pounding Rhode Island's coast Sunday. Lifeguards restricted swimming at beaches along the south coast Sunday, prohibiting bathers from venturing out much further than knee-deep.

Hermine is currently about 200 miles south of Nantucket with top sustained winds around 70 mph, just short of the threshold for a hurricane. The storm is expected to slowly turn to the west Monday afternoon, bringing it closer the the state's southern coast and sending bands of tropical weather across the state, including the East Bay.

By mid-day Wednesday, Hermine is expected to turn back to the east, and head out to sea, leaving the area by Thursday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center. As with any tropical system, Hermine is difficult to predict, and the forcast could change. Check back with eastbayri.com for more information as it becomes available.
