TIVERTON — Tiverton's budget opponents went to Newport County Superior Court Tuesday to debate their differences. After about an hour of argument before Judge Brian Van Couyghen, they were told to return for a decision at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.
But that was not to be. "We got bumped," said Anthony DeSisto, representing the Town of Tiverton.
The judge told the lawyers to return to court at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday to hear the judge deliver an oral decision.
Last Thursday the Tiverton Board of Canvassers invalidated an elector petition budget, denying it a place on the ballot for the May 20 Financial Town Referendum. The petitioners and the Tiverton School Department appealed the canvassers' decision to the court.
The four petitioners (Sally Black, Jerome Larkin, Randy Lebeau, and Joan Chabot), who had proposed the invalidated elector budget for the ballot, were represented by lawyers Stephen Robinson and Vicki Bejma.
