Fun is the focus of unified basketball game

Tiverton tops Barrington, 48-36

All eyes were on Barrington’s Marina Domenici as she stood near the Tiverton basket, ball in hand.

Both her teammates and competitors lined either side of her as she took aim at the rim. Laser-focused, she whipped the ball into the air; as it sailed through the net, Marina turned coolly around and pointed to the crowd, confident that it was going in all along.

That was just one of the many moments that brought a smile to the faces of players, coaches and fans alike during the unified high school basketball game between Barrington and Tiverton this past Wednesday, March 20 at Tiverton High School.

During the game, students with either physical or developmental disabilities hustled up and down the basketball court and took turns cheering each other on in their attempts to make a basket.

With every success came wild celebration — Tiverton’s Matthew Garcia pumped his fists into the air, while Barrington’s Sara Coffey could laughed all the way back on defense. It was an all-around positive environment that Tiverton head coach David Landoch was only more than happy to be a part of.

“You can’t have a bad day,” he said. “They lift you right back up.”

While Tiverton, led by Alex Boucher's 26 points, would ultimately triumph 48-36 over Barrington, the game showcased each team’s sportsmanship more than anything else.

Tiverton’s Jesse Robbins, without a second thought, offered up the ball to Barrington players in order to give them a turn at the basket; from both the court and sidelines, Eagles’ players rooted just as loudly for the Tigers’ Jessica Sartini to sink her shot each time she stepped up to the line.

“This is so rewarding,” Mr. Landoch said.

Both Barrington and Tiverton are already halfway through their seasons; the Eagles will next play against Portsmouth on Wednesday, March 27, while on the same day Tiverton will battle East Providence. The playoffs begin at the end of April.
