Helen C. (Shanahan) DeCosta, 81, of Tiverton, passed away on Thursday, April 5th.  She was the wife of Frederick R. DeCosta. 

Born in Fall River, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Bridget (Cahill) and William Shanahan who emigrated from Waterford, Ireland in 1928. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a trimmer in the garment industry.

Helen C. (Shanahan) DeCosta, 81, of Tiverton, passed away on Thursday, April 5th.  She was the wife of Frederick R. DeCosta. 

Born in Fall River, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Bridget (Cahill) and William Shanahan who emigrated from Waterford, Ireland in 1928. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a trimmer in the garment industry. 

She was a communicant of St. Madeleine Sophie Church. Helen was an avid Patriot's fan. She is survived by a daughter, Debra A. White (husband, William) and a son, Brian DeCosta (wife, Carla) along with grandchildren Kyle DeCosta and Jenna DeCosta. 

In addition she leaves a brother James Shanahan (wife Ann), nieces Erin and Meagan Shanahan, along with great nieces Abigail, Allison and Kaelin Tant. She was predeceased by a brother William Shanahan Jr.,  and  sisters Mary Taggart. & Eileen Shanahan. 

Visitation Sunday from  4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral will be held on Monday at 8 a.m. from the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, 462 Main Rd., Tiverton, with a Mass at  9 a.m. at St. Madeleine Sophie Church on Lake Rd., Tiverton.

Burial at Pocasset Hill.  www.almeida-pocasset.com for on line guest book.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
