James P. DeCastro, 63, Bristol

James P. DeCastro, 63, of Bristol, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017. He was the husband of Leslie (Cardoza) DeCastro for 31 years.

Born in Providence, he was the son of Dolores (Vargas) DeCastro and the late Joseph DeCastro. James was a graduate of De La Salle Academy and an avid fan of NHRA Drag Racing. Early in life, he was a business owner in Bristol and member of the Newport Lions Club. He served the state as president of the RI Association of Democratic City & Town Chairs, State Committee Executive Board, and was the state of Rhode Island’s first executive high sheriff. He served the town of Bristol as the Bristol Democrat Town Committee chairman and was the last Bristol County Sheriff in state history.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by his sisters Cynthia A. Singman and Susan M. DeCastro; daughter Kara A. Estrella and her husband Thomas; son James P. DeCastro Jr. and his fiancé Camblin Reyes and grandchildren Cole J. Estrella and Kenzie J. Estrella.

His funeral services will be held Friday, June 23, 9 a.m., from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., Bristol, with a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Church, 341 Maple Ave., Barrington. Burial will follow in Santa Maria Del Campo Cemetery, Barrington. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, 4-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Meeting Street School, 1000 Eddy St, Providence RI 02905, or the Bristol Rescue Squad, PO Box 775, Bristol RI 02809.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
