John C. Mello, 87, Tiverton

John C. Mello, 87, of Tiverton, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2017.  He was the husband of Rosemarie Ann (Rodrigues) Mello.  Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Maria C. (Medeiros) and Manuel C. Mello. 

Mr. Mello was the chief of police for the Town of Tiverton for 3 and 1/2 years, retiring in 1981 after serving for 25 years with the police force.  He received a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, summa cum laude  in 1977 from Salve Regina College.  He was a former charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

He had served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during the Korean War and was a member of the V.F.W. in Tiverton.  

Mr. Mello was a member of the Melody Rangers, a country western band, for 50 years.  He was a member of St. Madeleine Sophie Parish and was a eucharistic minister there.  In addition he served as an usher for over 35 years and was a CCD instructor for the confirmation class.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Lynn Mello a son, John C. Mello II, and was the father of the late Paul  Mello.  There are seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a surviving sister, Beatrice Ferreira.  he was the brother of the late Jesuino Mello, Manuel C. Mello, Agnes Munroe and Mary C. Mello.  He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m.  His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home 462 Main Rd, Tiverton, with a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Madeleine Church on Lake Road, Tiverton.  Burial to follow at Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery in Little Compton, with Military Honors.
