Judith Lynn Terry, 78, of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Newport Hospital in Newport.

She was the daughter of the late George F. and the late Marjorie C. (Wisner) Hickey Jr.

She was the wife of the late David F. Terry.

Judith was born December 7, 1938 in Flushing, Long Island, NY. Judy moved to Auburn, Maine, when she was just a child, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Maine, Orono.

After graduation, Judy joined the Navy and worked as a Crypto Watch Officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After two years of service, and a marriage to Dave, she left the Navy to raise a family, finally settling at her home in Portsmouth in 1968. She was self-employed as the “Dough Doll Lady” and sold handmade salt dough ornaments at craft fairs for over 30 years.

Judy was an avid supporter of empowering and educating women, and was past president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was particularly proud of the AAUW STEM program, where she inspired girls to go into math and science fields.

Judy was also on the board at the MLK Community Center in Newport, where she served as secretary in 2006 and 2007. During her tenure, she was also on the Institutional Advancement and Facilities committees.

In addition to her philanthropy, Judy and Dave spent many years sponsoring foreign students attending the Naval Command Course at the War College.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday November 3, from 4-6 p.m. in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. A memorial service, with Military Honors, will be held immediately following at 6 p.m.in the funeral home.

Burial will be private.

She is survived by her daughter, Alison G. Welsh and her husband Wesley, of Hyannis, Mass.; and two sons, Christopher L. Terry and his wife Donna of Westport, Mass., and Matthew D. Terry of Coventry, RI. She also leaves four grandchildren, Nathan Welsh and his wife Vanessa, Justice Welsh, Mariah Terry and Brandon Terry, as well as her brother David Alpren of Hollywood, Fla.

In recognition of Judy’s time and energy devoted to this organization, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the MLK Community Center, 20 Marcus F. Wheatland Blvd Newport, RI 02840 or at www.mlkccenter.org.
