To the editor:
I recently moved back to Little Compton over the summer after four years in Louisiana. As a runner on our local roads six days a week, I am used to dealing with the hazards of sharing the space with vehicles and operating under the assumption that drivers don’t see me.
In Louisiana, sharing was not the norm with cars often coming close enough that I could reach out and touch them but I continue to be grateful that the opposite is true here. In a town that has no sidewalks, nine out of ten cars will pull all the way into the other lane to offer a more than generous berth. Or in the event they can’t do so due to an oncoming vehicle, will come to a complete stop until they can.
I can not tell you how appreciative runners and cyclists alike are for this simple gesture. Besides an act of kindness, it lets me know that you see me, something I cannot gauge though a windshield. Thank you all for sharing the road, your respect to another human being and for the additional arm workout as I try to acknowledge each of you with a wave!
