Letter: Remark about our club’s ‘drunks’ was uncalled for

To the editor:

On behalf of the board and members at the Holy Ghost Club on Sodom Road in Westport, we would like to address an article that was written in the Shorelines on Thursday, October 19, in regards to The Holy Ghost Club. Headline: “Farm weddings allowed despite protests.”

The article on page 3 quoted a woman as saying: “As far as drunks on Sodom Road, check out all the nips along the side, (and) the Wednesday nights down at the Holy Ghost Club. Those drunks don’t come our way?”

One of our customers who came in to the Holy Ghost Club on a Wednesday night (the club is open to the public from 6:30-10 p.m.) was unhappy about she had read. She also voiced questions concerns about the drunkenness comment.

As a local business in town, the last thing we want to hear is that one of our customers was offended by a comment made in the article as they are a group that comes in weekly to enjoy some music, food and a couple of drinks for a couple of hours.

We would like to express our voice on that statement. We do open to the public on Wednesday nights for a few hours with a band and open kitchen. On those nights we usually have about 20 to 25 people with an age range from mid 30’s-70’s. We have never had an issue with anyone walking drunk, stumbling down the road or being loud as we do keep it under control.

That statement alone could show bad business on the part of Holy Ghost Club or any other business for that matter. Not only did it offend our Wednesday night customers but we do club rentals as well. We like to keep our loyal customers on Wednesday nights. We advertise like any other business and do not allow drunks to walk out and be inconsiderate in this town. Just like any other local business in town, we need to pay the bills to keep the doors open. Seeing a statement like that published was uncalled for from the woman (Carla Samson) who stated it.

As far as the nips on Sodom Road, please note that the Holy Ghost Club does not sell nips inside the club at all. There have been people, not just on Sodom Road but other roads in Westport, who throw the nips out of their car windows and these can be seen along the side of the road.

We think her comment was blown out of proportion and feel as though she could respond nicely in regards to that or offer an apology, especially if she has never been in the Holy Ghost Club on a Wednesday night to witness what goes on and if anyone walks out drunk. Our customers don’t want to be called drunks, especially when they are not, and we would like to keep our loyal customers as well as the club rentals.

Cassandra Cambra

Secretary of the Holy Ghost Club on behalf of the board and members.
