Letter: Tiverton Taxpayer Association shenanigans need to stop

To the editor:

I find it comical that Jeff Caron decides to write a letter to the editor lambasting the current Town Council.

Let's refresh his memory a bit. On April 11, 2011, there was a vacancy on the Tiverton Budget Committee. That evening at the Town Council meeting there were two candidates up for the position, Louise Durfee and Jeffrey Belli. According to the minutes, an initial motion was made for Ms. Durfee to be appointed as she was the next highest vote getter. That "policy" was questioned by then-Town Council member, and current Charter Review Commission Chairman, Tiverton Taxpayer Association member and TTA financier Robert Coulter.

The end result was the appointment of Mr. Belli over Ms. Durfee. To quote Mr. Caron in his letter to the editor, "seems fair right?" Ironically, later that year on November 28 due to another vacancy, Mr. Caron was also appointed. Might I also point out that he claims Mr. Perkins was the first applicant for the position. By that mentality no citizen, including the candidate that applied after the initial round of interviews, should be considered unless they apply first. More garbage logic. Not to mention that Mr. Perkins and Ms. Driggs (wife of Mr. Perkins and current CRC member) showed up outside Town Hall at 7:30 on the second interview night and asked what time the Town Council meeting started! (We were outside talking after the Town Council tabled the vote ... and they start at 7).

Mr. Caron and his TTA friends need to stop the shenanigans and threats of higher taxes to our citizens and our citizens need to pay attention to these smoke and mirrors shows they perform. He refers to Mr. Perkins as a "taxpayer advocate" which implies that Mr. DeCotis, Mrs. Joslyn and myself are out to get your wallets! It's easy, I guess, to accuse when you don't know someone.
