Tiverton blows past Central Falls, heads to D-III Final

EAST PROVIDENCE- The Tiverton High School boys’ basketball team is headed back to the State Championship game after defeating Central Falls 67-41 in the Division III semifinal game on Friday night. A second half scoring surge helped the Tigers to seal the win.

“Good to be back. We played hard, we played hard defensively. The team (Central Falls) averages 60+ points a game and the guys just wanted to hold them and push them out,” said Tiverton head coach Dave Landoch. “

Tiverton got out to an early lead when junior Carson Hart sank a three-point shot putting the Tigers up 8-4 just 4:06 into the game. Tiverton extended their lead as they went on a 10-4 run going up 18-8 with just over five minutes left in the first half.

“Our guys believe they can stop other guys from scoring,” Landoch said about his team’s first half defensive play. “It doesn’t always happen that way but we worked on containing the ball, not letting it get to the rim on easy baskets and closing out.”

The Tigers scored 12 points in the remaining five minutes of the half sending the teams to the locker room with Tiverton leading by a 30-19 score.

The second half was a tale of Tiverton’s offense as the team was able to score at will. Senior Michael Hrycin drained two of the Tigers four three point shots in the halfs opening four minutes extending their lead to 47-24.

“Usually we don’t come out in the second half like that. We moved the ball. Carson (Hart) had some great cuts with the ball getting some easy layups, and guys finding him, passing it,” explained Landoch on his team’s offensive outburst in the second half.

Tiverton tallied 20 points in the game’s final twelve minutes to help solidify the 67-41 win over Central Falls and a trip to the Division-III State Championship. The Tigers will play undefeated Wheeler to decide D-III supremacy on Sunday afternoon on the campus of CCRI-Warwick.

“They’re so good. They have five guys that can shoot outside. They have four guys that can shoot inside. They’re very, very tough and hard to defend,” Landoch said on Tiverton’s upcoming opponent Wheeler.
