Tiverton budget committee gets three new members

Posted

TIVERTON — The Tiverton Town Council voted to appoint three new members of the town budget committee at its regular meeting Monday night, Oct. 23: Michael C. DeCotis, Jennifer Joslyn, and David J. Paul.

The new members fill seats left vacant by the departure in late July of three budget committee members who were elected to the Charter Review Commission in the election of July 18.

The new elected charter commission members — Donna Cook, Jeff Caron, and Nancy Driggs — assumed their charter duties on July 31.

Appointment by the council of their budget committee replacements — who will hold office until the general election of November 2018 — has been pending for at least several council meetings.

The council was presented with five candidates, all of whom were nominated: Michael C . DeCotis, Jennifer Joslyn, David J. Paull, John A. Perkins, and Carolyn Wieman.

The vote was 6-1 for Mr. DeCotis, with Councilor Patricia Hilton abstaining. For Ms. Joslyn the vote was unanimous. For Mr. Paull, the vote was 5 in favor and 2 against (Councilors Christine Ryan and Patricia Hilton).

Since three of the nominees were voted on, and approved, by the council, thus filling the vacancies, the other two nominees were not voted on

Mr. DeCotis is a diabetes educator and a Rhode Island high school basketball official, who said in his application for appointment that he has "been very active in the community attending most budget committee meetings."

Ms. Joslyn said she's been a member of theTiverton community for seven years, and has been "employed as a manager in the hospitality industry on Aquidneck Island for the last 21 years."

Mr. Paull is a firefighter for the Town of Barrington, a Little League coach and safety officer, and a CPR instructor.

Also appointed to boards and commissions at Monday's meeting were:

• Stuart Hardy, re-appointed to a three-year term ending Oct. 15, 2020, on the Historic Preservation Board. The vote for Mr. Hardy was 6-1, with Councilor Lebeau voting against.

• James M. Camara, unanimously re-appointed to a four-year term on the Personnel Board, ending Oct. 15, 2021.

• Kathleen G Skrzypiec, unanimously reappointed to a three year term on the Tax Assessment Board of Review, ending on Oct. 15, 2020.
