Tiverton High School top ten students — Class of 2017

1. Kyle Peckham, class valedictorian, is the son of Debra (Sylvia) Raposo and John A.L. Peckham of Tiverton. He is a member of the National Honor Society, representing Scholarship, and RI Honor Society, Peer Helping Network, and baseball (3). He is a Quest Bridge Scholar and National College Match Finalist. He is the recipient of the Renssalaer Medal and scholarship, RI State Elks Association Scholarship, Principal’s Award, Community Service Award, Outstanding Math Student Award and Outstanding Science Student Award. He was named ABC 6 Best of the Class, Stanley Sincoski Scholar Athlete Award, AP Scholar Award, and selected for the National Society of High School Scholars. Kyle will attend Brown majoring in mechanical engineering.

2. Kyle Pacheco, class salutatorian, is the son of Sandra and Brian Tavares of Tiverton. He is a member of the National Honor Society, RI Honor Society, Golf Team (2), Soccer Team (4) and Math Team. Kyle is the recipient of the Nora Wood Moore Scholarship, Conrad Beaulieu Memorial Scholarship, Megan Cordeiro Memorial Scholarship, William Goodman Scholarship for attendance, Prince Henry Scholarship, Outstanding Biology Student Award, 2015 Bridge Building Competition winning team, Society of Women Engineers Award and was a Rhode Island CTE Presidential Scholar. Kyle will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in computer science.

3. Greggory Raymond is the son of Bill and Debra Raymond of Tiverton. He is a member of the National Honor Society, representing Character, RI Honor Society, Golf Team (4), captain in his Senior Year. He received the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, Corporate Scholarship from Acushnet Company, the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, and the Principal’s Award. Greggory will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in chemistry.

4. Maiah Vorce is the daughter of Edward and Deolinda Vorce of Tiverton. Maiah is a member of the National Honor Society, RI Honor Society, the David Cicillini Youth Cabinet Member, Future Business Leaders of America, Peer Helping Network, Reader’s Forum, Student Council, and the Volleyball Team. She is the recipient of the Stanley Sincoski Scholar Athlete Award, Seth Magaziner Young Leader Award, Conrad Beaulieu Memorial Scholarship, Women’s Club of Newport County Scholarship, Stone Bridge Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship, Principal’s Award, Outstanding English Student, Outstanding Physics Student, and Outstanding Social Studies Student. Maiah will attend the University of New Hampshire majoring in biology.

5. Stephen Gacioch is the son of Andrew and Sandra Gacioch of Tiverton. He is a member of the National Honor Society and RI Honor Society. He was a member of the Football Team (4), captain junior and senior years, Basketball (4) captain senior year, Baseball (4) captain senior year. Stephen is a member of Tiger Pride and active with Special Olympics. He was awarded the Golden Dozen for football and received the Springfield Book Award, Principal Award, and an NEA Scholarship. Stephen will attend the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, majoring in civil engineering.

6. Emma Becker is the daughter of Paula and Ken Becker of Tiverton. She is a member of the National Honor Society, RI Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America (president), Reader’s Forum, and Drama Club. She is the recipient of the George Eastman Young Leader’s Award, Society of Women Engineers Award, Henri Pare’ Memorial Tiverton Lions Club Scholarship, Principal’s Award, and the Founders Scholarship from ITA. Emma has been a teen ambassador at Trinity Repertory Company and has performed in local theater productions. Emma will attend the University of Rhode Island majoring in theatre-acting concentration.

7. Andrew Fernandes is the son of Jennifer and Randall Fernandes of Tiverton. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. He is a National Merit Scholar Finalist, National Hispanic Scholar, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Unity Scholar and a member of the Math Team. He received the American Mathematical Society Award and was an assistant to the IT director in the Tiverton School Department. Andrew will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in computer science/video game design.

8. Alyssa Giordano is the daughter of Leticia Lugo and Steven Giordano of Tiverton. She is a member of National Honor Society, RI Honor Society, Student Council, Salsa Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Yearbook, Peer Helping Network and Acts of Kindness Club. Alyssa was a participant in the UTAP Underwater Technology Apprenticeship Program. She is the recipient of the Sage Colleges Book Award, Anthony Raposa Memorial Trust Scholarship, and was named Outstanding Business Student. Alyssa will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in engineering.

9. Allyson Ramos is the daughter of Michelle Ramos of Tiverton. She is a member of the National Honor Society, RI Honor Society, Salsa Club (4) Reader’s Forum (4), Field Hockey (4), and Basketball (2). Allyson is the recipient of the Stephen Murray Memorial Scholarship, Jason Souza Memorial Scholarship, Conrad Beaulieu Memorial Scholarship, NEA Tiverton Scholarship, Carolyn St. Michel Memorial Scholarship, and the Red Sox Foundation Scholarship. Allyson will attend the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, majoring in civil engineering.

10. Aidan Furze is the son of Anne and Paul Furze of Tiverton. He is a member of the National Honor Society, RI Honor Society, Drama Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, Coalition Café, and Peer Helping Network. Aidan participated in the Dual Enrollment Program with Bristol Community College. Aidan will attend Bard College majoring in neuroscience.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
