The Tiverton baseball team lost to Mt. Hope 12-5 in a Division II home game on Friday evening. The loss gives the Tigers a 5-10 division record with three games to go in the season.
The Tigers had high aspirations when the season began, but the team has struggled defensively. Tiverton ace Mason Farias got the Huskies to hit some ground balls during their game, but the Tigers defense couldn’t come up with the outs and consistently extended innings for the Huskies. By the fourth inning, Farias had thrown 100 pitches and had to come out of the game with the the Tigers down 7-4.
Offensively, the Tigers aren’t stringing hits together. Tiverton jumped on Mt. Hope freshman starting pitcher Ethan Leary in the bottom of the first inning for a 4-2 lead, but struggled to score the rest of the game.
Lead off hitter Matt Potvin struck out to start the inning. Shortstop Josh Schneider reached base when he was hit by a pitch. Leary then walked the next three batters, Mason Farias, Garrett Nolan and Dan Garde forcing in a run. Donovan Cole hit a grounder to short for the second out. Farias scored on the play. With two on and two out, Paul Amaral singled home Nolan and Garde to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
The Tigers offense only mustered one more run in the sixth inning to make the score 10-5.
Farias singled to start the inning, but was called out at second base on a force out on a grounder by Nolan. Garde walked moving Nolan to second base. Cole hit an infield fly moving the runners to second and third. Paul Amaral had his third RBI of the day when he singled home Nolan. Damien DeGala ended the inning, grounding out to second base.
