Westport to remove lead paint from Annex nursery school space

Posted

The Town of Westport will undertake remediation measures for traces of lead paint found on doors and door jams in the basement of the Town Hall Annex used by the Codimonk Nursery School.

Testing for lead paint is required for facilities built before 1976 that provide services for children such as childcare centers.  Municipal buildings that have no child services such as police stations, town halls, fire stations and other require no testing.

Westport leases out a portion of the basement area of the former Earle School at 856 Main Road, known as the Town Hall Annex, to Codimonk Nursery School.

Generally, the state requires lead testing from time to time.  Prior tests in the basement area of the Town Hall Annex where the nursery school is located did not disclose any lead paint.

Testing took place on July 31 at the nursery school and areas within the building used by the nursery school as required by the state due to new ownership.  The inspection revealed lead in five of the door jams and two of the doors in the basement hall and bathrooms thiough not in the actual classrooms. There was no lead found in other parts of the basement area.

The town has authorized a registered lead removal contractor to remove the lead paint during the weekend of August 7-9 after business hours.  This area of the building will be closed to the public during this time.

Interested parties can review the report in the Board of Selectmen’s office at 816 Main Road Monday through Friday from 8:30-4 p.m.  For any questions, call the selectmen’s office at 636-1003 or e-mail at bos@westport-ma.gov.
