Mt. Hope swim teams both place 5th in division meet

The Mt. Hope girls and boys swim teams both placed fifth in the Division 3 meet held at Roger Williams University pool last weekend.

Leading the way for the Lady Huskies — who scored a total of 186.5 points — was senior Cassidy Allen, junior Kerrie Larson and freshman Jordan Borges, who all medaled. Cassidy placed third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:29.89, and third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:06.08. She combined with Kerrie Larson, Molly Halpin and Jordan Borges to place third in the 200 free relay with time of 2:06.08, and 4th in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:46.30.

Kerrie Larson placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 28:88, and fourth in the 100 free with a time of 1:08.06.
Jordan Borges also tied for third in the 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:28.97, and also finished sixth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:51.77. 

Other Huskies scoring points included Molly Halpin, eighth in the 100 breaststroke; Sierra Maturi, 14th in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 backstroke; Drew Tyska, eighth in the 100 back and 16th in the 50 free; and Maddy White, 14th in the 100 back.

The Mt. Hope Boys also finished 5th with a total of 201 points. The race of the night came at the very end in the boys 400 freestyle relay when Alan Aguiar, Taylor Torgeson, Cam Dutra and Jake Bassard finished second with a time of 4:09.93.
Alan Aguiar qualified for the state meet, taking fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:08.69 and 5th in the 100 back with a time of 1:11.09. 

Other members scoring points included Cam Dutra, 4th in 200 free and 4th in 500 free; Garrett Barker, 8th in 100 back, and part of the 200 medley relay team and the fifth-place 200 freestyle relay with Zeke Salley, Hunter Motta and Jake Bassard; Hunter Motta, 13th in the 200 free and 11th in the 500 free; Mark Tavares, 15th in 200 free and 13th in 500 free; Taylor Torgeson, 12th in 50 free and 10th in 100 free; Jake Bassard, 15th in 50 free and 16th in 100 free; and Zeke Salley, 10th in 500 free and 12th in 100 breast.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
