PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ and boys’ track and field days had a good day Tuesday, with both squads sweeping their meets against Mt. Hope, East Providence and Middletown high schools.

The girls dominated Middletown (131-12), Mt. Hope (111-37), and East Providence (102-48) as a team.

Nikki Merrill turned in another standout performance, winning the 800-meter run (2:29.9) and the 1,500 meters (4:50.7). She was also a part of the 4x400-meter relay along with Olive Allen, Mariana McManus and Sofia White, which won in a time of 4:30.5.

McManus joined Jessie Chen, Meghan Smith and Claire Williams to win the 4x100-meter relay in 53.4. Chen tied for second place with teammate Olivia Rivers in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14 seconds flat.

Kerry Kehane won two jumping events: the long jump with a best leap of 15 feet, 3.75 inches, and the tripe jump with a best effort of 32 feet, 2 inches.

Elizabeth Sullivan also had a good day, winning the 3,000-meter run in 10:23.1 and coming in second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:52.1.

Eleanor White, debuting in the pole vault, won that event by clearing 6 feet. Sierra Harmon, also competing for the first time in the hammer throw, took fifth in that event with a best throw of 72 feet, 3 inches.

How the boys fared

As a team, the boys beat Mt. Hope (118-26), Middletown (117-30) and East Providence (93-56).

Colt Nichols won two individual events: the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.5 seconds, and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 39.9. He also joined Noah Gramitt, Ezra Leary and Isaiah Kittel to win the 4x400-meter relay in 3:51.7, the foursome’s best time of the season.

Ben Chase won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:54. Martin Lasky took first place in the vault by clearing 11 feet, and came in third in the triple jump with a best leap of 35 feet, 6.5 inches. Jake Vaspol won the hammer throw with a best effort of 101 feet, 1 inch, and came in third in the discus with a best throw of 86 feet, 5 inches.

Sean Coyne came in second in three events: 100 meters (11.4 seconds), high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and the long jump (19 feet, 2 inches).

Gramitt came in second in the 1,500 meters (4:35.4) and third in the 800 (2:16), while Kittel took second in the 800 (2:15) and third in the 1,500 (4:47). Cliff Shablom came in second in the hammer throw (93 feet, 5 inches) and third in the shot put (37 feet, 1.25 inches).

Nick McCarthy came in third in the 200 meters (25.5) and third in the long jump (18 feet, 7 inches). Aaron Javelle took second in the 400 meters (58.3 seconds) while Liam Walker came in second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (47.7 seconds).

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
