Annual Challenger Jamboree in Portsmouth brings smiles to all

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — For the 12th straight year, children with developmental ad and physical disabilities from around Rhode Island and beyond descended upon Glen Park Sunday for a day full of baseball, games, food and fun.

The Jamboree was started by Bob Dyl, president of the Portsmouth-based Rhode Island District 2 Challenger Division. For the first time, this year Mr. Dyl handed over the reigns of running the Jamboree to the division’s vice president, Chris Patsos.

Mr. Dyl was still there on Sunday, however, and was given the honor of throwing out the first pitch during the opening ceremonies.

Besides all the baseball, there was also a bounce house, water slide, free raffle prizes, mascots from many different sports teams, horse rides, live music, face-painting and balloon-making and more.

As always, everything was offered up free of charge and a team of volunteers made it all possible so that parents could enjoy a stress-free day of watching their children play.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
