Ascencao: You deserve a representative who listens

Posted

I decided to run for state representative because I didn’t feel heard by either my representative or my government. I can’t count the number of times I sent an email or a voicemail, but never got a response.

The most basic and important responsibility of a representative is to be responsive, regardless of whether they agree with you. Too often here in Rhode Island, elected officials feel entitled to ignore the people they represent. That’s why all my campaign materials include both my personal cell phone number and my email address. That commitment won’t end when the election does. If elected, I’ll hold a town hall every quarter. You deserve a set time to speak out and publicly question your representative.

I’ll continue to answer phone calls and emails. Even if we don’t agree on an issue, I’ll always sit down for a cup of coffee to hear your views.

Laufton Ascencao
