Carl Keitner and Mike Scriven exhibiting September 28 – October 29 at IMAGO

IMAGO artist Carl Keitner and guest artist Mike Scriven will have their artwork featured in a group exhibit with other IMAGO artists September 28 through October 29 at Imago Foundation for the Arts’ IMAGO Gallery at 36 Market Street, Warren. A free, public reception will be held on Friday, September 29 from 6 – 8 p.m.

In 1956, at age 11, Keitner and his family escaped from Communist Hungary and eventually settled in Montreal, Canada where he grew up. Graduating with a BFA from Ecole des Beaux Arts de Montreal, he majored in graphic design and photography. After running his own graphic design studio in Montreal and subsequent photography studio in Providence, Keitner is now exploring the use of multi-media photography and paint as well as metal sculptural work.

His work for this exhibit, called “Fading Memories,” combines black-and-white photography portraits created many years ago that he has reprinted on watercolor paper and combined with paint and other mixed media materials on canvas. He says, “Evolving as a person and as an artist, I look back on the path that got me here and decided to pay homage to a few of the beautiful, brave and self-confident women who trusted me to celebrate their vulnerability and their uniqueness.”

Keitner will also present an artist talk, "Seeing What You're Looking At," on Thursday, October 19, from 7:00 -8:30 pm.  He says, “When taking photographs we tend to see only what we expect to see. Objects behind or front of our intended ‘target’ are invisible. We'll talk about looking through a small viewfinder and seeing the big picture.” The public is invited to this free event.

Scriven is mostly self-taught and has focused his art career on freelance illustration and fine art painting. The paintings he’ll be exhibiting in the gallery are created with acrylic paint on medium-density fiberboard. He notes, “The concept for these pieces was to create work that reflects my interest in scarred surfaces, color as emotional experience, and with nostalgia as narrative.”

Other IMAGO artists who will be exhibiting include Eileen Siobhan Collins, Rose Esson-Dawson, Mary Dondero, Betty Harrington, Pascale Lord, Eileen Mayhew, Linda Megathlin, Yolanda Mazzoni, Mercedes Nuñez, Anne Marie Rossi and Howard Rotblat-Walker, Lenny Rumpler and Howard Windham.

Regular IMAGO gallery hours are Thursdays 4 – 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
