Charles W. Kemp, Sr., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, a longtime resident of Barrington for the past 52 years. Charlie was born in Deal, N.J., where the family summered with many members of the Kemp extended family. Charlie’s youth was spent in Deal and he graduated from Asbury Park High School.

Charlie's next adventure was proudly serving our country in the US Navy as a signalman on the USS Kasaan Bay aircraft carrier in World War II. He saw action in the Pacific and was honorably discharged on April 29, 1946.

Charlie met his predeceased wife June at the Jersey shore, married and made their home in Arlington, Va., where he started his family and his lengthy and successful career at Travelers Insurance Company. Charlie continued his advancement in his career with Travelers relocating to the Providence office living in Barrington for the balance of his career and after retirement.

While balancing a career and raising his three sons, William, Charles Jr. and John, Charlie was a significant contributor to the Boy Scouts of America for over 60 years of his life, locally with Troop IV in Barrington. He received numerous awards including the prestigious Silver Beaver. Charlie was a leader and father figure to scores of young men, with Eagle Scout designations led by his stewardship in excess of fifty (50) Eagles including his son and grandson, both named William, and son John.

He is survived by his sister Lillian Slover of Newfane, Vt.; sons William (Lynne) of Warren, Charles (Linda) of Annapolis, Md., and John (Aimee) of Lander, Wyo., eight (8) grandchildren and four (4) great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held off the coast of Deal, N.J. where his cremains will join those of his predeceased loving wife June. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boy Scouts of America Narragansett Council, P.O. Box 14777, East Providence, RI 02914.
