The East Bay co-op girls hockey team will play in the state championship finals series after the Eagles defeated the Mt. St. Charles co-op team in two straight games last weekend.

East Bay skated past the Mounties 2-1 on Friday night. Madelyn Cox opened the scoring for the Eagles with a goal at the 9:49 mark of the first period. Grace Flaherty assisted on the goal.

The Eagles went up 2-0 a few minutes into the second period when Maeve Harrington found the back of the Mounties' net. Flaherty and Cox assisted on the goal. Mt. St. Charles cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal off a penalty shot.

"We scored two goals that got called back," said East Bay coach Allison Faria.

Coach Faria said freshman winger Kat Barker played well for the Eagles during the opening game win.

"She was phenomenal with the puck," said Coach Faria. "She did a great job."

Meanwhile, Cox and Carissa Rego led the Eagles' defensive effort, along with sophomore goalie Ellee Kopecky.

"She's been huge for us all season," said Coach Faria.

East Bay played even better during Saturday night's game, which ended in a 6-1 win for the Eagles.

Less than a minute into the game, Flaherty tipped a shot from Rego past the Mt. St. Charles' goalie, giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

"We went hard," said Coach Faria. "There was no playing around."

East Bay continued its dominating play throughout the first period, building its lead to 3-0. Cox scored an unassisted goal at the 7:48 mark and Rego scored a power play goal at the 11:41 point in the period. Barker assisted on Rego's goal.

"We looked like a completely different team on Saturday," said Coach Faria. "We were roaring and ready to go."

The Eagles stretched their lead to 5-0 in the second period. Kelly Gerdin scored off an assist from Ella Hanley at the 11:52 mark. Hanley also assisted on the next goal, a score from Barker right as the period ended.

East Bay went up 6-0 at the start of the third period when Mary Arkins scored off assists from Gerdin and Flaherty. The Mounties finally got on the board with a power play goal at the 11:30 mark in the period.

Now East Bay is preparing for a state finals series against the LaSalle-Moses Brown co-op team. Coach Faria said she is confident her team will give its best effort in the state finals. She also praised the work of her seniors on the team.

"They've been phenomenal on and off the ice," said the coach.

The first game of the girls state championship series is scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m. at Brown University.
