Mt. Hope baseball players made it to the prom on time after dispatching second place Narragansett 15-5, in five innings on Friday afternoon. Charlie Amarante, Nick Simeone and Cam Santerre all got dressed in the parking lot, posed for a photo and went on to meet their dates at the junior prom. The playoff bound Huskies are now 8-5 and tied with Smithfield for third place in Division II.

“I think the boys had some urgency today, trying to get to the junior prom.” said Head Coach Mike Mazzarella. “They came out swinging today. When you put up five in the first two innings, the kids get pumped and there is a lot of good energy.”

The Huskies are a senior laden team that have all played together since their freshman year.

“Seven of the nine seniors start. The other two are worked in. All of them contribute,” said coach Mazzarella. “We have a very experienced team. They work hard together. Senior leadership has helped us get through on a day to day basis.”

Senior outfielder Brandon Moreira agreed.

“We are just family. We do a lot together. We hang out and have fun. But when it’s game time, we get serious and get down to business as usual,” he said.

The team’s ace, Connor Padovich pitched a crisp game against Narragansett. He has been a workhorse for the Huskies this season, pitching 26.2 innings with a 3-1 record, 28 strikeouts and a 5.40 ERA.

“Connor has been our best pitcher all season and we follow him on the mound,” coach Mazzarella said.

On Friday, the team hit the cover off of the ball, scoring 5 runs in the first, second and fifth innings. The team pounded out 13 hits.

Senior clean-up hitter Stew Kay hit two doubles, going 2 for 4, with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Kay leads the team in hitting with 14 hits, including a home run, 4 doubles, 15 RBI and a .359 batting average.

“He’s a kid that’s going to play college ball,” said coach Mazzarella.

Senior five hitter C.J. Casalino hit a single and a double, going 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. The third baseman has 13 hits for the season, with 2 doubles, 7 RBI and a .351 batting average.

“C.J. has been hitting the baseball all year long,” said coach Mazzarella.

Senior short stop Cam Santerre reached base three times with a run scored. He has 12 hits this season, with 12 walks, 2 doubles, a triple and has scored 18 runs.

“Cam is a great hitter, plays great defense and is fast as lightning. That’s a good combination to have,” coach Mazzarella said.

“Senior center fielder Charlie Amarante took a day off Friday. He is normally the team’s leadoff hitter and closer,” said coach Mazzarella.

As the team’s closer, Amarante has pitched 13 innings with a 1-1 record, 10 strikeouts and a 2.77 ERA.

“Charlie has a lot of accolades from year’s past. He’s been a first team All-Division and Division MVP. It starts at the top of the line up and it moves down,” coach Mazzarella said.

Senior catcher Caden Cabral went 1 for 1, reached base three times and scored three runs against Narragansett.

“He’s been our guy behind the dish all year. He played second base today, so he’s kind of versatile,” said coach Mazzarella.

The season

After starting the season 6-0, the Huskies lost four in a row before winning 2 of 3 last week.

“We lost a lot of nail biters. We were in every single game. That’s all you can ask for, coach Mazzarella said. “We are fighters. We dug through and won two of three this week. It puts us in good position for the playoffs.”

Playoffs

The Huskies are looking to play their way into a home playoff game at Guiteras Field.

“We love playing at Guiteras,” coach Mazzarella said. “They come early, get batting practice and get into a good rhythm. We have great fans, a lot of support and we have a good atmosphere here. It’s always nice to play in front of our home fans.”

“If everything connects like it did today, We have what it takes to make a deep run in the playoffs,” coach Mazzarella said.
