Joseph Robert Medeiros, 89, of Warren, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 at Silver Creek Manor. He was the husband of Artemizia (Cordeiro) Medeiros.

Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Joseph and Gloria (Geyer) Medeiros. He was the father of Catherine Medeiros of Warren and the late Russell Medeiros; grandfather of Nicholas Sardinha and Rachael Sardinha; brother of John Medeiros and Henry Medeiros both of Ocala, Fla. and Louise Serpa of South Attleboro, MA.

Mr. Medeiros was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School and enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1948. He was awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his courage during the Battle at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. He was then employed as the General Carpentry Foreman for the Newport Naval Base for 32 years before retiring.

His funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 AM in St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
