Thirty-two Science Olympiad teams from up and down the East Coast competed in Harvard University’s first annual Science Olympiad Invitational, and a pair of Kickemuit Middle School students struck gold.

Twenty-two KMS students spent all day Sunday at Harvard, in events spread across the campus and ranging from physical events like the “Elastic Launched Glider” and “Roller Coaster,” to intense testing on meteorology and anatomy and physiology.

Abby Lanctot and Zoe Gorman won gold in the “Write It, Do It” event. In this event, one student will write a description of an object and how to build it, and then the other student will attempt to construct the object from this description.

Lucien Chidester and Keaton Fisher placed fifth in “Meteorology.” This event emphasizes understanding of basic meteorological principles with emphasis on analysis and interpretation of meteorological data, graphs, charts and images.

Fiona Sharp and Millie Piper placed sixth in “Elastic Launched Glider.” This event has students design, construct and test elastic launched gliders to achieve the maximum time aloft.
