Lady Huskies soccer team primed for the playoffs

The Mt. Hope girls soccer team beat Coventry, 2-1, and tied Cumberland, 3-3, this week and look ready for a good playoff run. Huskies goal keeper Thea Brum made 22 saves over the last two games, while yielding just four goals.

“When this team is focused, playing 1-2 touch soccer and sharing the ball that's when we're at our best. If we can maintain our focus and play disciplined and together, we will be tough to beat,” said head coach Kerri Ferreira.

Olivia Medeiros and Kerrie Larson each scored in the victory over Coventry at Vendituoli Field last Thursday night. Larson tied the score at 1-1 in the first half. Medeiros scored at 57 minutes to give the Huskies the victory.

Kaelen McKenzie, Olivia Medeiros and Rayna Medeiros scored for the Huskies against Cumberland at home on Monday night.

The Lady Huskies are currently in fourth place in Divison I, with a record of 11-4-2, with one regular season game left before the playoffs.

“Each player has a role on this team. Whether it is as a starter or a sub coming off the bench. We need every player to stay positive, motivate each other and be mentally focused on each opponent going forward,” said the coach.

Notes: Thursday’s senior night was in remembrance of Kayleigh Raposa, a former soccer, basketball and track athlete that passed away in an auto accident in 2007. In honor of Kayleigh the team let off balloons before the game. All proceeds from the game went to the Kayleigh Raposa Scholarship Fund, according to the coach.

Next up, The girls play at The Lincoln School on Oct. 28, at 11:00 a.m.
