To the editor:
I recently moved to beautiful Bristol, R.I., from the Washington, D.C., area. We selected Bristol because of the wonderful historic community and the clean air and water of the Narragansett Bay area.
Having worked for over 30 years for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), I do not take for granted the environment of my community, nor the planet on which we live. Protecting our environment should not be a partisan issue. Regardless of our political philosphies, we all need clean air and water.
Unfortunately, our current administration in Washington does not share that philosophy, and the EPA is being systematically destroyed.
While at the EPA, I had the responsibility of developing and enforcing regulations and policies regarding the most hazardous air pollutants, those most likely to cause cancer and other serious health issues or adverse environmental and ecological effects. Currently, under the radar of the American public, those regulations and policies that were in place to protect our precious environment are being weakened and overturned each day.
In addition, hundreds of scientists and engineers with decades of experience and knowledge are leaving the EPA, with no interest or effort to replace them. These drastic changes will have a significant impact on public health and safety for years to come.
Wherever we live, our environment is our most important resource. I urge our community to not take for granted the beauty we have here in Bristol and throughout our country, and to speak out against this administration’s assault on EPA and the environment in which we live.
