National grid to work from 7 p.m. through night

Work crews will dig up a portion of Water Street early next week — but the impact will be a minor road bump, town officials say.

Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 and continuing for about 12 hours, crews from National Grid will dig up a small section of road and sidewalk at the northeastern corner of Water and State streets to remove an old gas “vault” that is no longer being used, Warren project manager Bob Rulli said. Town and National Grid officials have known about the vault for some time, and the town purposely left that section of sidewalk unfinished in anticipation of the work.

Mr. Rulli said there will be traffic re-routing at the affected area, but he said the impact will hopefully be minor.

Though National Grid will have to patch a section of the newly-laid asphalt on Water Street, residents will not see it for long as Warren still has to lay down a final coat of asphalt along the length of Water Street. The coat put down several weeks ago is just an intermediate coat. Town officials anticipate laying down that final coat in about three weeks.

In addition to digging at Water and State, National Grid on Monday night will also excavate a small area adjacent to 263 Water St., where a gas leak from the main gas line to a lateral line has been discovered.
