Flood gates open as Huskies romp Tiverton 13-2, beat Barrington 4-2 in consecutive days

The Mt. Hope Huskies scored seven runs in the first inning on their way to a 13-2 route of Tiverton during their game at Tiverton High School on Monday afternoon. The Huskies also beat Barrington, 5-2, at Victory Field on Tuesday. The two wins boosts the Huskies record to 6-4 in Division II and drops the Tigers to 3-6.

“Our offense got going early for us,” said Huskies Head Coach Mike Mazarella.

Mt. Hope lead off hitter, Kodi Sautome popped out to start the inning. Then the flood gates opened for the previously light-hitting Huskies.

Cam Santerre singled to center. Jalen Kopecky-Morton followed with a walk. London Camelo moved the runners over on a fielder’s choice. Tiverton starting pitcher Matt Potvin then walked Cam Connor and Gage Stephenson to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead and load the bases for Huskies second baseman Jack Standish. The freshman delivered a two out, two run single to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

Potvin then hit Jonathan Jones to load the bases again. Huskies center fielder Ryan Pires walked in the Huskies fourth run bringing up Sautome for his second at bat of the inning.

With his second chance and the bases loaded, the Junior right fielder smashed a bases clearing double to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Santerre grounded out to end the inning.

“Jack and Kodi came up big with those two out hits in the first,” said coach Mazarella, adding, “It really set the tone for the rest of the game.”

Tiverton scored one run off Mt. Hope starting pitcher Ethan Leary, but the sophomore settled down nicely and pitched three scoreless innings before yielding another run in the fifth. The sophomore went 5 1/3 innings yielding 2 runs on 3 hits with a strikeout and a walk.

“Ethan pitched great,” said coach Mazzarella. “It was important for him to go deeper into the game. He did that and it put us in a good spot to get a win,” the coach said.

Nicholas Calenda and Seth Cloutier blanked the Tigers the rest of the way.

Mt. Hope scored another run in the second inning, two more in the sixth and three runs in the seventh. Sautome finished the game with 2 doubles and 4 RBI. Standish had two hits and drove in 3 RBI. Camelo, the Huskies cleanup hitter, went 4 for 4 with an RBI. Santerre had two hits and an RBI.

On Tuesday, the Huskies beat Barrington at Victory Field, 4-2 and look to complete an important three game stretch when they face Eagles again on at Guiteras Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Mt. Hope baseball team lost to Middletown 10-5 during a home game at Guiteras Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Huskies used four pitchers during the game. Starting pitcher Nicholas Calenda went 3 innings and gave up 5 runs (3 earned). Seth Cloutier pitched the 4th and 5th innings and gave up 1 run. Ryan Pires and London Camelo pitched the 6th and 7th and gave up four runs.

“Our pitching has been strong all year,” said Head Coach Mike Mazarella, adding, “Our defense needs to come out and pick up the slack and so does our offense,” the coach said.

The offense has been troublesome as well. The Huskies left nine men on base, struck out six times and had six pop flies.
