Since the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook, districts nationwide have prioritized security. Ours is no exception. But school safety is a complex issue, and we need to cover all bases. Last month, I invited the Director of Security for Newtown Public Schools to speak to our school committee to lend his insight, I drove to Newtown to attend a Safety and Security Meeting and tour Sandy Hook Elementary, and I’m working tirelessly on policies and procedures to protect our students. All important pieces to the puzzle. But we cannot stop at numbered doors and video cameras, policies and procedures. We need to think bigger. We need stronger mental and behavioral health services, training in identifying the signs, and tools to provide support to families. Early intervention and ongoing support are essential to ensuring our children are safe. This is important work. I look forward to making sure it gets done.
