Schofield: We need a positive school culture

Posted

Creating a positive, inclusive, engaging culture in our schools is paramount to the success of our children. Focusing on the relationship between academic success and social-emotional learning through District initiatives like Responsive Classroom and peer mediation empowers teachers and administrators to create safe, respectful and engaging learning communities, in which adults are modeling expected behaviors. And most importantly, these initiatives give students a sense of belonging and create a community where everyone is learning and growing together in a respectful environment. As a result, disciplinary issues decrease and learning increases. Teachers are better able to teach and students are better able to learn. Safe schools and positive learning environments are crucial for promoting the healthy development and success of every student. I will continue to advocate for programs, and professional development for teachers and administrators, that promote the kind of community we want in our schools for ALL our children.
