Scolaro scores two as Huskies blank Mounties 3-0

Huskies senior striker Jo Jo Scolaro scored two goals in leading Mt. Hope to a 3-0 win over Mount St. Charles Academy in a home game at Vendituoli Field on Friday night.

“The team played a little sluggish in the first half. We switched a couple of the forwards around to get us some fresh legs in the second half. That seem to help us and we were able to finish the game strong,” said Head Coach Nick Medeiros.

Scolaro broke an 0-0 tie scoring his first goal on a direct kick just outside the box with 30:23 minutes to go in the game. The striker blasted the kick by a Mount wall and right at goalkeeper Andrew Moneca. The ball slammed off Moneca’s hands and was kicked with such velocity it went up and over the keeper’s head and into the back of the net.

“I was trying to kick to the far right post. I didn’t hit it too good. He just didn’t save it and it hit off his hands and bounced in,” said Scolaro.

“He’s a captain and he leads by example on the field. He’s our leading goal scorer. He’s scored 16 goals this season. He’s putting on a show. I love him on our team,” said coach Medeiros. “He’s done as much as he could for this team to help get us to this point.”

Huskies goalkeeper senior Tomas Caetano came up with a big save minutes later when the Mounties forwards got behind the defense and raced in on a two on goal. The shot came from the left side towards the right side of the goal. Caetano dove and made the stop.

“Our defense left the winger open on the far side. said Junior midfielder Nathan Silveira. Tomas was in position. He does what he always does. He came up with a big save.”

“Tomas was clutch,” said coach Medeiros. “He made a great diving save.”

“He was on his A-game today,” added Silveira. “In the first half he came up with a fantastic over-the-head save. He just flipped the shot over the crossbar. He kept the score tied at that point. He’s making big saves this year. It’s helping us out.

With 4 minutes to go and Mt. Hope clinging to a 1-0 lead, the team was a awarded a penalty kick when junior forward Trey Coroa went in on a scoring bid and was shoved to the ground inside the box by Mount defender Brad Plamondon.

Coach Medeiros had Scolaro take the kick. He struck the ball from the left and placed a beautiful shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

“It was 1-0. I knew that I had to score that,” Scolaro said. “I picked the same spot I’ve been going all year and I scored.”

With a minute to go, Silveira collected the ball 25 yards in front of the goal and blasted a shot on Moneca, who bobbled the ball. Coroa followed the shot dribbled the rebound around the keeper and booted the ball into the net for the Huskies third goal of the game.

“Mount kicked the ball up. I jumped and headed it down. I passed to Jo Jo. I made a run and he passed it back to me. I took a touch and shot it. The goalkeeper paddled it away and Trey was there to rebound it,” said Silveira. “Trey is always in the right spot at the right time.”

“We kept applying pressure with the fresh legs that we were able to put in and we got a rebound and were able to add the third goal to stamp the win for us,” said coach Medeiros.

The win boosts Mt. Hope’s record to 5-4-3 in Division II. The team has been on an upward swing in October, recording a 2-1-2 record. The Huskies need one more point to make the playoffs.

“We have four games left,” said Scolaro. Some of the games are pretty tough.”

Coach Medeiros feels that the team lacked aggressiveness and a good work ethic earlier in the year.

“We kind of fade in and out of it,” coach Medeiros said. “Once we are on our game and rockin’ and rollin’ in full swing, we can do damage.”

“If we can make a nice little run and get a couple of wins, we can work our way up the standings,” he said.

“Going forward, I’m optimistic that we can get better over the last few weeks. Get into the playoffs and do some damage,” said the coach.
