Warren's AVTECH earns national honors

Tech firm singled out as one of top five small business to work for in United States

If you’re looking for a place to work, you couldn’t do much better than AVTECH, the producer of computer environmental monitoring systems based out of the Cutler Mill in Warren.

That’s the word from Interise, a national small business consulting and development agency, which recently named AVTECH one of the top five best small businesses to work for in the country.

AVTECH, which employs under 30 people, was one of several hundred small business nationwide considered for the honor. The award came at a two-day event in Washington, D.C. last month.

Russell Benoit, AVTECH’s marketing and channel communications manager, said the award is an honor, but is not surprising. The tech company, founded by Warren resident Michael Sigourney, really is a great place, he said.

“We have such a low employee turnover rate,” Mr. Benoit said. “I’be been here a year and a half, and I’m still one of the new guys. We’ve had people who have been here for 15, 16 years. If I show up for work 10 minutes early, I’m probably one of the last in.”

The difference at AVTECH, he said, is that the company’s ownership makes it easy for employees to love their jobs.

“It’s not just being in a gorgeous mill, it’s not just being in a relaxed atmosphere. We believe in what we do, and that’s the important part. Ownership lets us know what the goals are and gives us the leeway and encouragement to achieve those goals.”

The Interise award isn’t AVTECH’s only recent honor. The firm won an Innovation in Manufacturing Award last month from the Providence Business News.

AVTECH, which Mr. Sigourney founded 29 years ago, manufactures environmental monitoring systems and the software that runs them. The company’s products are used in 185 countries, all branches of the United States military, more than 80 percent of the Fortune 1000, and most state and federal agencies.
