To the editor:

The local Granges Patron of Husbandry formed a county Grange — ‘Newport County Pomona Grange #4. Now in the year 2017, this includes the following Granges: Conanicut #21 in Jamestown, Kickemuit #24 in Warren, Portsmouth #29, Aquidneck #30, and Little Compton #32.

These Granges have been active in many different programs, and they are still active in promoting local agriculture.

At present there are five local winter markets selling many local vegetables, meats, seafood and more. These include Aquidneck Growers, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 909 East Main Road, Middletown; Mount Hope Farm, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 250 Metacom Ave., Bristol; Pawtucket, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1005 Man St., Pawtucket; Stony Creek, Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 1210 Wilbur Ave., Swansea; and Westport Winter Market, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Town Hall Annex, Main Road (now closed for the rest of the season).

Also there are many local farms this winter selling all kinds of locally raised meats. Not all of these farms are selling every king of meat — please call them to arrange your purchase and pick-up.

These include Sweet and Salty, 68 Shaw Road, Little Compton, 635-9528; Red Barn Beef, 408 Stafford Road, Tiverton, 624-8898; Windmist Farm, 711 Weeden Lane, Jamestown, 423-9767; Aquidneck Farms, 333 Wapping Road, Middletown, 418-4330; SVF Foundation, 152 Harrison Ave., Newport, 848-7229; Bill Manchester, 5 Borton Ave., Warren, 508-400-3022; Silk Tree Farm, 54 Pottersville Road, Little Compton, 360-7004; and Rossi Farm, 894 Neck Farm Road, Prudence Island, 440-7780.

Also selling potatoes in the local winter markets are Ferolbink Farm, Tiverton, Quonset Farm, Portsmouth, and Maplewood Farm in Portsmouth.

Looking ahead to the soon-to-come spring, there will be many more farms, farm stands, and roadside stands that ill start selling greens, strawberries, all vegetables, fruits, flowers and more.

This will take you to the time to buy your local live Christmas tree. Follow the Grange news in the local papers.
