The Westport basketball team lost their second game to top seeded Bishop Connolly 59-44 in Fall River on Friday night. The loss dropped the team’s seeded record to 8-7. The Wildcats need just one more win in their last three games (Diman, Sacred Heart and Southeastern) to make the state tournament. The win boosted Bishop Connolly’s seeded record to 11-1.

“We played hard,” said Head Coach Scot Boudria. “We didn’t make a lot of shots. If you don’t make a lot of shots against this team, you’re going to lose. That was the difference tonight. We turned the ball over a lot and didn’t sink a lot of shots.”

The Wildcats didn’t shoot well in the first half and found it difficult to keep up with Cougars 6 foot 7 inch sharp-shooting senior from Australia, Cooper Creek. Creek sank six three-pointers for the Cougars. If he missed his shot, the big man would follow it up, collect the rebound and dunk the ball through the hoop. Creek who lived in Westport last year and now lives in Tiverton, led all scorers with 29 points.

“Creek got some open shots,” said junior captain Connor Lecomte. “We should have stayed on him no matter what. But we didn’t. When he’s open, he’s going to knock them down.”

Bishop Connolly led 14-8 after the first quarter and stretched their lead to 31-18 at the half. Creek scored 13 points in the first half. When he wasn’t scoring he was kicking the ball back out to his teammates.

Coach Boudria put athletic forward Aidan Rock on Creek. But the much taller, savvy senior got the better of him most of the game. Still, Coach Boudria thought that freshman Aidan Rock did his best guarding Creek.

“Aidan did a nice job on Creek. It’s tough to guard a kid who’s 6’ 7” and going to play Division I or II somewhere. But we worked hard and I’m happy with our team,” said Coach Boudria.

When Bishop Connolly pushed the lead to 50-27 after the three quarters, Coach Bourdria gave point guard Connor Lecompte the green light to shoot. The junior scored 6 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to bring the team back to respectability.

“Connor Lecomte what a player he is,” said Coach Boudria. “He might not show up in the stat sheet with 30 points, but he is one heck of a hard-nosed player. He worked his tail off today. As did everyone.”

“In the fourth quarter we started shooting better we started moving the ball better,” said Lecomte. “That’s what I like about this team, we don’t give up. We want to win. When we get down (in points) we still stay energized.”

Junior Darian Machado also pitched in scoring all seven of his points in the fourth quarter. Machado forced two Cougar turnovers and raced to the basket for easy layups both times.

“I just kind of went for it,” said Machado. Reached out with the right hand. Took the ball all the way down the court and took it to the hole.

Machado also hit a three-pointer as the Wildcats closed the gap from a 26 point lead late in the third quarter, to an 18 point lead.

“He comes in and brings really good energy to the team. He pumps up everyone on the team and gets us going,” said Lecomte.

“Offensively Darian is strong with the ball,” said Coach Boudria. “He sometimes goes off course, but if you can harness his energy, he’s like a microwave. He’s like Vinny Johnson. He can give you instant offense. But he’s got to do the little things to play more. Box out, rotate on the defensive end and cut down on turnovers.”

Overall Coach Boudria was happy with the team’s work ethic during the game.

“We were gritty,” he said. “We worked hard. We went up for loose balls. Players were sweating their tails off. We just couldn’t hit an open shot.”

Westport scoring: Connor Lecompte scored 14 points, Nick Payne scored 10, Darian Machado scored 7, John Silva and Ben Boudria each scored 3, Domanick Vitorino and Aidan Rock each scored 2 and Dawson Dos Vais and Aidan Viveiros each scored 1.
