Seeding counted for nothing Thursday as the 12th seed Bourne Canalwomen visited 5th seed Westport and bounced the Wildcats from the playoffs.
The loss brings an end to a memorable season for the Westport girls who went 13-4.
Freshman Annie MacMaster, at second singles, won her match by a score of 6-2, 6-2 and was the only Westport player to earn a victory. She finished the season with a perfect 17-0 singles record.
“Our goal from day one was to win the league and to make the state tournament so we had high expectations for ourselves and truly believed we had the ability to accomplish them,” said coach Matthew Kampper.
“The girls were an absolute pleasure to coach this season. They are an energetic and hardworking group,” he added. “There was great team chemistry and the girls really supported one another all season.
Thursday’s home match was the last in Westport uniform for senior captains Kendra Wilkinson and Grace Moran.
I can't say enough about our two senior captains, coach Kampper said. They are the embodiment of what it means to be a student athlete and you couldn't pick two better individuals for a young group of girls to look up to and learn from.
But the good news for Westport is that the team will have strong talent returning next spring.
“We return a great group of core players and will look to some of our younger players to step up and take on a bigger role but our expectations will once again be lofty,” the coach said.
Along with MacMaster, first singles player Kayla Pimentel will be back, as well as the first doubles pairing of Sam Arsenault and Amber Valcourt.
