Suspect drove wrong way on Route 195; police said he had weapons

A Dartmouth man faces a host of charges after he led police on a chase last Wednesday, April 13, that began in Westport and ended after a standoff in North Stonington, Conn.

According to Connecticut State Police, Ian Grant, 36, of Dartmouth, was arrested at about 2 p.m., approximately an hour after he drove his white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck off the road and into a wooded area just over the state line from Rhode Island. Police said they recovered firearms from his truck.

The string of incidents began early that morning, when Grant's home on Prospect Street in Dartmouth caught fire; a neighbor said he saw the suspect drive away from the scene as the house was burning. At around 11 a.m., New Bedford police attempted to pull him over on an outstanding warrant for assault and intimidation of a witness.

Instead of stopping, police said Grant fled the scene, turning onto Route 195 west. New Bedford Police said that as they attempted to lay down 'stop sticks' to blow out his tires, he drove toward officers, who fired on the Toyota. Grant allegedly struck two cruisers before continuing to flee west in the eastbound lane of 195.

State Police issued an alert for the white Tacoma, and police brought in a helicopter, several patrol cars and a canine unit. However, they opted not to follow as he drove on the wrong side of the highway.

Soon after, Rhode Island police spotted the Toyota in Jamestown, and a chase ensued south to Charlestown, into Westerly, and finally into Connecticut. As he drove his truck off the road on Route 78, police approached the vehicle with guns drawn, pulled him out and placed him under arrest. Details on criminal charges were still pending Friday morning.
