The Westport Field Hockey team lost to Seekonk, 1-0, in a Mass State Field Hockey Tournament South Division II preliminary playoff game on Wednesday.

Seekonk’s Chloe Lunnie scored the only goal of the game when she beat Westport goalkeeper Jacob Farias at the 10:56 mark in the first half.

The Wildcats played strong team defense all game long. Goalkeeper Jacob Farias recorded 10 saves in the effort.

“Our defense is very young, but they are strong. Offense scores points, but defense wins games,” said Wildcats head coach Michelle Duarte.

“Freshman midfielder Jenna Carvalho played an awesome game. She handled the right side well. My goalkeeper Jacob Farias played his heart out. Maddison Avila our center defender is our energizer bunny she never stops,” said coach Duarte.

“I’m proud of the positivity on the field. They lift each other up instead of taking each other down. And that’s something that we are focused on,” said the coach.

“All the girls really stepped up and showed what we’ve been working on all season. Talking to each other, running to the ball, really just working together as a team,” added Freshman midfielder Jenna Carvalho.

“People assume a lot when we play them. Like, ‘they are so little,’ but sometimes we blow them away with how we can play,” said freshman center defender, Maddison Avila.

“Our team goal was to get to the state tournament and we got there. The team is very young (consisting of freshmen, 7th and 8th graders) and they have worked hard all season. I am very proud of them this season. They have worked hard and persevered. They can be taken lightly (because of their age) and they should never be, because they are a force. They will be incredible in a couple of years when we have nine seniors,” said the coach.
