Westport students will be back in the classroom Wednesday, a day after a faulty pump at the middle/high school led to a loss of service at the school, as well as the elementary school and library.
Westport Community Schools officials said the pump failed Monday night, and a replacement was installed Tuesday morning. As of midday, the tanks were filling, the district reported.
Though school will be in session Wednesday, the district must, per the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP):
• As water begins flowing through the system, well water can only be used for hand-washing and bathroom use.
• Water for cooking must be boiled until further DEP notice.
• Bottled water will be provided for for drinking and cooking Wednesday, until water test results are returned.
In a statement:
“Many school and district personnel acted quickly and effectively to remedy this problem in a remarkably short time span so that our families can send their children to school and staff can be present to start another wonderful year in the Westport Community Schools.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we worked through today’s challenges, and we look forward to welcoming students and staff to all our schools in the morning.”
