Three Westport organizations that benefit young and old are joining together to hold 'Walk/Run for Westport,' a town-wide walk and run this coming Sunday, Oct. 23. It benefits the Westport Education Foundation, the Westport Middle-High School PTO and the Friends of the Westport Council on Aging.
"We're just really excited to be working together, and bringing the community together," said Tanya Quinlan of the education foundation. "It's something new for the community and we're hoping for a great turnout."
So far, about 80 walkers and runners have signed up, and Quinlan said she expects that number to increase.
The event takes place at the new middle high school at 400 Old County Road, with runners officially stepping off at 10 a.m. Walkers can go at their own pace after the race begins, and race-day registration begins at 9 a.m. There is no rain date — "we'll just go inside (the walking track) if the weather doesn't cooperate, said Quinlan, who will be working with a group of about 20 volunteers to stage the event. Apart from an opportunity to walk and run, there will be vendors, games for the kids, refreshments and representatives from other community and non-profit groups around town. All funds raised Sunday benefit academic enrichment programs in Westport schools and will also enable the Friends to fund Council on Agin activities and programs.
Though you can register Sunday, early registration is also available at my.racewire.com. Once there, search "Walk/Run Westport."
"We can't wait!" said Quinlan.
