Holden and Sylvain combine for 42 as Wildcats demolish Holbrook 59-26

Wildcats lose out on MAC title with loss to West Bridgewater

Korynne Holden and Leah Sylvain combined for 42 points as the Westport girls basketball team demolished Holbrook 59-26 in an away game on Friday. The Wildcat edged Case 46-44 on Monday and fell to West Bridgewater 49-35 on Wednesday in their third three-game week in a row. The Wildcats are 13-3 and are 4-2 in the Mayflower Athletic Conference with both loses coming against West Bridgewater.

“The reason that we’ve been successful is that we are a team,” said head coach Jen Gargiulo. “We support each other and push each other to be better.”

Holden and Sylvain were phenomenal against Holbrook. The junior guard scored 8 of her 20 points in the first quarter. Holden made 4 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Westport led just 12-9 after the first quarter, then Sylvain got hot and scored 10 of her game high 22 points in the second quarter as Westport increased the lead to 33-9. The senior guard drained four 3-pointers, made 5 steals and had a rebound, an assist and a blocked shot. Sophomore guard Julia George sank a 3-pointer and a jumper for 5 points in the second quarter.

Jenna Egbe led the Wildcats with 12 rebounds. The sophomore center scored 6 points and dished out 2 assists. Junior forward Sarah Perry grabbed 5 boards, made 2 steals and scored 4 points and Meghan Molloy added 3 rebounds and 2 points.

MAC title chance fell in loss to West Bridgewater

The Wildcats chances of winning the MAC title fell with their home loss to West Bridgewater on Wednesday. Holden led the Wildcats with 14 points in the loss. She got battered driving to the hoop against the larger West Bridgewater defenders as did Sylvain who scored 9 points. Julia George scored 5 points with a 3-pointer and Meghan Molloy, Sarah Pery and Molly Costa each scored 2 points. Jenna Egbe added a foul shot.

The referees called an abnormal amount of charging fouls on the Wildcats. Westport was scratching and clawing to get back into the game as West Bridgwater clung to a six point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Sylvain got a step on a defender, drove hard to the hoop and sank a running one handed jumper. When the referee’s whistle blew, most thought she’d get a chance for a three-point play. Instead, the senior was called for a charge and fouled out of the game. It was a huge swing in momentum for the Wildcats.

It’s a tough loss, but we have a lot of season left,” said Coach Gargiulo. “Sometimes things happen that are out of our control. We have to play with composure when things aren’t going right. They have made humungous improvements on that this season.”

On Monday Sylvain led the team with 17 points as the Wildcats edged Case 46-44. Holden scored 11 points, George netted 7, Molloy and Perry scored 5 and Egbe added a free throw.

The Wildcats scored 14 points in the second quarter and 21 in the fourth with the game in the balance.

Sylvain scored 8 points in the second quarter and 7 points in the fourth. She got to the foul line 5 times and sank just 4 of 10 free throws.

As a team the Wildcats got to the line 9 times in the fourth quarter and made 8 of 18. It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough to beat the Cardinals in their own gym.

“Our goal is to continue to be successful so we can achieve a home playoff game,” said Coach Gargiulo. “We are looking forward to senior night to celebrate our two awesome seniors on Friday. We have a lot of big things coming up.”

Westport has four home games remaining in their schedule before playoffs. The Wildcats host Case on Monday at 6:30 p.m., Avon on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and Bishop Connolly on Friday for senior night at 5:30 p.m.

They play their last regular season game against Wareham on Tuesday Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m.
