Letter: New school is the most affordable option for Westport

To the editor:

Some of you know me as a grandfather, others as a graduate of the Westport public schools. Others may remember me as that father with his wife, watching our daughter or three sons at a school sporting event or academic assembly.

I chaired the Westport Finance Committee, the Community Preservation Committee, and the Westport Board of Selectmen.

Over the last three years, many Westport residents have discussed our school system and its financial impact. As a member of the Westport School Building Committee I participated in meetings, discussions, and heated debates. We talked about building needs, cost efficiencies, community pride, and the extreme cost of preserving existing buildings.

On February 27, we will have a special election to vote on a new grades 5-12 school building for our town. I will vote yes and encourage you to consider a yes vote as well. In my opinion, it is in the best interest of our community. I believe this proposal is economically sound and financially feasible.

Voting no does not reduce our expenses. It will add to costs of operations. It will not eliminate the need to pay a much higher cost in the near future.

Please consider voting yes on February 27, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The folks listed below and more at http://westport-sos.com/supporters/ also believe that a yes vote is in the best financial interest of all Westport residents.  Thank you, and please remember that your vote makes a difference. See you at the polls!

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
