To the editor:

Our recent local election was a victory for the majority of Westport voters who want our town governed in a fair-minded, responsible, mature manner. The message was clear: We are done with the regressive cronyism that has defined Westport for way too long.

Although I did not personally win my bid for a seat on the Board of Health, the 198 people who wrote in my name for the three-year spot were triumphant. Together, we drove home another message: The BOH and other town officials must be diligent in their responsibilities to oversee the conditions and welfare of farm animals.

Prior to and during the campaign some of us were referred to dismissively as “one of those animal rights people” or as someone from “the animal rights group.” I am proud to be identified as such, but make no mistake—although this was the issue that galvanized us, we were and are about more than that.

When one cares deeply about the rights of animals, one also cares for the rights of all who have no voice or political power. And that includes children and the natural world they will inherit. People who stand for animals stand for the protection of the innocent and respect for the water and land, which nurtures us all.

Elected and appointed Westport officials have their work cut out for them across these and other issues. I wish them (and us) great success. Know that if you strive to “do the right thing” we will be beside you.
