Letter: Why I'm voting 'Yes' on the override next month

Posted

I am a senior citizen and am proud to call Westport home. I want to invest in the improvements needed to help my community sustain and to grow. I support educating our children and the work of our teachers and schools. I support infrastructure maintenance and our ability to upgrade systems and staffing to meet current demands of our growing population. For these reasons, I support the override. We cannot take care of our community in the best way possible without it.

Westport has one of the lowest tax rates in the state of Massachusetts. We cannot function at our best capacity without the financial support needed to adequately fund the work that needs to be done. Please support the override.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
